Discover the top 5 goalkeeper drills for 10-year-olds. Improve handling, diving, footwork, and confidence with these fun, developmentally appropriate exercises.
π§ Why Goalkeeper-Specific Drills Matter
At Pro Touch Football, we know that goalkeepers often get overlooked in youth training β but theyβre just as important as outfield players. For 10-year-olds, learning the fundamentals of goalkeeping builds confidence, focus, and sharp reflexes early on.
These 5 drills are perfect for young keepers to improve their handling, diving, footwork, distribution, and communication.
π₯ 1. W-Shape Catching Drill
Purpose: Teaches correct hand positioning and safe handling of the ball.

How it works:
- Coach or partner throws the ball toward the chest and face.
- The goalkeeper catches it using a “W” shape (thumbs close together, fingers spread).
- Practice low, mid, and high balls.
Coaching Tips: Emphasise soft hands, staying on toes, and keeping eyes on the ball.
π 2. Diving Save Drill
Purpose: Improves reaction, technique, and landing safety when diving.

How it works:
- Set up cones to either side of the goalkeeper.
- The coach shouts βleftβ or βrightβ and rolls or throws a ball to that side.
- Keeper dives to save and quickly returns to starting position.
Tip: Teach landing on hips/shoulders, not elbows or wrists.
π¦Ά 3. Footwork Shuffle + Catch
Purpose: Builds balance, coordination, and agility.

How it works:
- Set up 3 cones in a line (1m apart).
- Goalkeeper shuffles side to side through cones, staying in ready position.
- At the end, coach throws a ball for a catch.
Variation: Add hurdles or ladders to increase intensity.
𧀠4. Rebound Reaction Drill
Purpose: Enhances reflexes and decision-making under pressure.

How it works:
- Use a rebound board or wall to kick/throw balls that bounce back unexpectedly.
- Keeper must stay alert and react quickly to catch or parry.
- Focus on 3β5 reps per set.
Progression: Add a second ball or distractor to increase challenge.
π£οΈ 5. Command the Box Game
Purpose: Improves communication and leadership from a young age.

How it works:
- In a small-sided game (4v4 or 5v5), goalkeepers must call out: “Keeper!”, “Man on!”, “Away!” etc.
- They earn points for each successful command or ball claimed.
Coaching Note: Young keepers need to be taught to speak up β this builds confidence over time.
β Final Goalkeeper Coaching Tips for 10-Year-Olds
- Make sessions fun and challenging
- Focus on basic positioning, not perfection
- Use praise to build confidence
- Encourage quick decision-making
